Abstract

This study discusses about security situation in the Malacca Strait and Riau Islands which focuses on the phenomenon of modern pirates. The existence of pirates in these waters itself has existed since colonial times, but the invention of the steam engine and the development of marine technology could make the pirates no longer appears. Since the end of World War II, pirate re-emerged and transformed into modern views by its weaponry, strategy and objectives. Modern pirates in the Malacca Strait and the Riau Islands became a phenomenon considering these waters is the most vulnerable region. This article describes how straits countries, particularly Indonesia to response this threat through policies and regional cooperation during 1982 - 2005. The method used is the historical method with literature studies through books, journals and current newspapers
