Typology of Desistance from Terrorism (Desifter): Case of 35 Former Terrorists in Indonesia

Research output: Contribution to journalArticlepeer-review

Abstract

The phenomenon of desistance from terrorism is not only limited to explaining how former terror perpetrators can stop being terrorists or re-engage in terrorist groups. On the other hand, research on the desistance of terrorism must answer a wide variety of other factors and influences that support a person experiencing desistance from terrorism. The researcher began this study by reviewing the existing literature on the desistance of terrorism, taking into account conceptual challenges and reviewing the main theories of the framework and empirical findings of the desistance of terrorism, especially in Indonesia. Based on this, it is possible that the formation of a typology of desistance of terrorism and its forecasting can provide different views regarding the handling and preventing criminal acts of terrorism. Using qualitative methods, researchers conducted in-depth interviews with 35 former terrorists and a Focus Group Discussion (FGD) with 13 experts on terror intervention. This study's results illustrated the form of the typology of the desistance of terrorism. Based on this typology, factors that support and inhibit the occurrence of desistance from terrorism can be seen, such as catalyst events and idling modes.
