TOWARD SUSTAINABLE URBAN DESIGN FOR ENHANCING TOURISM IN HISTORICAL DISTRICTS OF KYOTO

Abstract

This paper examined the characteristic of domestic tourism in Kyoto and analyzed how the city set strategies of sustainable urban design for enhancing tourism and maintaining the city's attractiveness. The study was based on an investigation of tourist's planning documents and semi-structured interviews with local government staffs of Kyoto, local communities and tourists as well as the author's own experience on several research trips in some tourist destinations at Kyoto. The study concluded that the implication of urban planning of Kyoto has effectively improved the subsistence of many tourist objects without disturb their spirit of places.
