Abstract

Third places such as coffee shops for example, have grown a lot in quantity over the past few years, especially within areas in the city populated by younger people from higher socioeconomic class (Rath & Gelmers, 2016). This phenomenon happens to match the characteristics of the younger generation with the highest number in Indonesia, generation Z (Statistics Indonesia, 2020). Generation Z is a communitarian generation, a generation with a character that likes to gather and form communities. However, generation Z from lower socioeconomic class living in kampung doesn't get to gather and spend their time in the widely available third places with high prices within the city. Kampung (urban village) is a residential area that is densely populated, located side by side with the city, where they have traditional living habits, unplanned building patterns, and the occupants' work tends to be informal (Sihombing, 2023). On the other hand, each third place has its own components that mold it into its distinct characteristics. These components are third place shaping factors, where people from different groups might have their own preferences in selecting their third place of choice based on these factors (Finlay, Esposito, Kim, Gomez-Lopez, Clarke, 2019). Consequently, generation Z living in kampung with their own conditions certainly have their own considerations in finding spaces that lead to the formation of communities among them. Therefore, this paper discusses third place shaping factors that affect generation Z in kampung's third place selection and which of those third place shaping factors that can directly lead to the formation of communities.
