Abstract

Implementation of pain management in hospitalised infants encounters problems due to inadequate pain assessment in painful procedures, lack of knowledge of pharmacological / non-pharmacological pain management and inconsistency in implementing correct pain management techniques. Thus, the infant's pain is often either over-treated or undertreated. Recent evidence indicates that the fetus and newborn can feel and respond to painful stimuli1.
