The Role of pumice in selt-compacting lightweight aggregate concrete manufacture

Abstract

In this decade the self-compacting lightweight aggregate concrete (SCLWAC) is produced using Ordinary Portland Cement Type I, but relatively few SCLWAC produced using a PCC (Portland Cement Composite) cement. This article discusses the role of pumice as lightweight coarse aggregate in the manufacture of SCLWAC, in which PCC acts as a matrix and pumice act to reduce concrete’s density. As many as 39 trial performed to obtain mix design of selfcompacting concrete. From 39 mix-trial obtained three mixtrial that have self-compacting properties. From three mix-trial selected only one the best mix-SCLWAC based on compressive strength and density at 28 days. A 0.32 kg/m3 polyvinyalcohol PVA) fibers added in the selected mix-SCLWAC (Mix D) and then casted in cubes and cylinders mold for three times repetition. These curing time is 3, 7, and 28 days. After curing times, these samples tested compressive strength, splitting tensile strength, modulus of elasticity which refers to ACI 318 and Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM). The results show that ligthweight pumice aggregate has been successfully utilized in the manufacture of SCLWAC exhibiting good properties of fresh concrete and hardened concrete, and a 0.32 kg/m3 PVA fiber in Mix D SCLWAC decreased compressive strength and modulus of elasticity, but it increase splitting tensile strength.
