The Role of Corpus in Building a Dictionary for Young Adult

Abstract

In modern lexicography, the role of corpus for building dictionaries is inevitable. A corpus is a collection of selected papers that is compiled to represent a language or language variety. To build a reliable dictionary, it needs a collection of language uses in real life. This paper presents our project inbuilding a teenager dictionary in Bahasa Indonesia, including advantages and challenges that occurs during dictionary development. Data resources in this research include conversation, teen magazines, television series, movies, radio and TV programs, as well as social media. The results indicated that the corpus collected from gave a great help in the process of our teenager dictionary building. The corpus provides us with a rich and various examples of teen language uses that can lead us to select and present micro- and macrostructures of the dictionary in a better way.
