The influence of Mg doping on structures and optical properties of ZnO nanorods grown on ITO using ultrasonic spray pyrolysis and hydrothermal methods

Abstract

Undoped ZnO and Mg-doped ZnO nanorods with various Mg/Zn atomic ratios (1, 3, and 5%) have been grown on indium tin oxide (ITO) via a two-step process of ultrasonic spray pyrolysis (USP) and hydrothermal methods. The effects of Mg doping on the structure, morphology, and optical properties were studied. The structure analysis using X-ray diffraction (XRD) revealed that all samples had the hexagonal wurtzite crystal structure with predominant orientations of (103) and (002). The morphology observation was carried out using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), showing that the ZnO and Mg-doped ZnO nanorods had the hexagonal shape and the Mg-doped ZnO nanorods with 5% Mg/Zn atomic ratio had slightly smaller diameters. The photoluminescence (PL) emission and ultraviolet-visible (UV-vis) diffuse reflectance examinations were performed to characterize the optical properties. The PL spectra represented that the near band-edge emission (NBE) peaks of the samples were at ∼400:nm and the broad deep level emission (DLE) peaks at ∼610 - 620:nm. The intensity ratios of DLE peak to NBE peak (IDLE/INBE) of the Mg-doped ZnO nanorods with Mg/Zn atomic ratios of 3 and 5% were lower than the IDLE/INBE ratio of the undoped ZnO nanorods, indicating the decrease in crystal defects and improvement of crystallinity The Tauc plots calculated from the reflectance spectra showed that the optical bandgap increased with the increase of Mg concentration.
