Abstract

The research in this paper is a study of concepts in the Indonesian language. In the Indonesian language, research on concepts is a rare study so this research needs to be done as a first step on the research on other concepts that exist in the Indonesian language. A concept is something abstract that only resides in one's mind. To concretize a concept, the embodiment of the concept is necessary. One of the embodiment of the concept is images. This research focuses on the concepts in the minds of children embodied in the form of images of the categories of fruit, flower, and animal. The categories are selected based on UCREL Semantic Analysis System (USAS) Category System which has 21 main categories and 232 subcategories. The category of fruit, flower, and animal belong to life and living things category. The category is chosen because it is easy finding in children's daily life. This research aims to find the concept of categories of fruit, flower, and animal on 5th grade elementary school students. The benefit of this research is finding prototype of fruit, flower, and animal concept in Indonesian language based on gender. This research using quantitative and qualitative methods. The data of this research is images derived from the concept of the category of fruit, flower, and animal on 5th grade elementary school students who have a 9-12 age range. The analysis in this research is done using rank scale theory of Goodness-of-Exemplar (GOE). This research is also investigate the concept difference between boys and girls. In investigate this concept difference is used quantitative and qualitative methods. Quantitative methods are used to calculate the number of specific images that can be represented as the most drew concepts of each category. On the other side, qualitative methods is used to describe the difference of images' result between boys and girls of each category. Data collection techniques were conducted by using questionnaires containing the respondent's identity and the drawing columns. The research results showed that the images representing the concept of fruit, flower, and animal in boys are mango, sunflower, and shark. On the other side, images representing the concept of fruit in girls are watermelon, cosmo flowers, and fish. The research results also show that the concept of fruit, flower, and animal between boys and girls is different.
