The Accuracy in Predicting Endotracheal Tube Size for Malayan Pediatric Patients: A Comparison Between Ultrasonography and Cole Formula

Research output: Contribution to journalArticlepeer-review

Abstract

The objective of this research was to compare the accuracy of ultrasonography in comparison with Cole formula in predicting the size of uncuffed endotracheal tube for Malayan pediatric patients aged 1–6 years old. This was a cross-sectional study conducted at Cipto Mangunkusumo Hospital. Following approval from the Ethical Committee, sixty samples were obtained. The size of uncuffed endotracheal tube (USG-based, Cole formula-based, and actual size), reintubation incidence during procedure, and time required for USG measurement were recorded. Data were analyzed by using the statistical analysis. The accuracy of ultrasonography in predicting the size of uncuffed endotracheal tube among pediatric patients was 95%, while the accuracy of Cole formula was only 51.7%. This result was statistically significant (p< 0.05). The use of ultrasonography was more accurate than the Cole formula in predicting the size of uncuffed endotracheal tube for Malayan pediatric patients aged 1–6 years old, the accuracy of which were 95% and 51.7%, respectively.
