Abstract
In the early 2000s Indonesia experienced the emergence of many new novelists who producedseveral literature works. Among the new novelists, who was considered young, severalmanaged to get strong recognition as a writer thus gaining symbolic legitimation in Indonesianliterary field. By studying the case of Eka Kurniawan, a young novelist who debuted in the2000s, this research aims to explain the struggle of young novelists to gain consecration andsymbolic legitimation in Indonesian literary field. Differing from other research that doesn’temphasize the contestation between newcomers and established senior writers in theIndonesian literary field, this research instead highlights the contestation and the struggle ofyoung novelists to gain symbolic legitimation in the literary field. To explain that, this researchbased its explanation on the author’s biography from aspects of habitus, capital, and strategyof the authors in facing the situation of his social arena. Thus, allowing the research to presenta picture of how young authors as actors face the structure that works behind the area wherethey belong. The research employs a qualitative approach, making use of secondary data, usingthe Field of Cultural Production theoretical framework by Pierre Bourdieu to explain the findings.
