N2 - Present experimental and numerical methods provide reliable ways to estimate the stability of earthdams under the effect of earthquakes. Currently, many appraisals are led on older dams in order to re-evaluate their safety against the risks of liquefaction and failure. The paper describes an experimental study carried out on the materials of glacial origin of a large height dam, including big elements up to 50 mm. Geotechnical characterization tests have been made on the material, complemented by consolidated drained monotonous triaxial tests (CD), to derive the failure criterion of the soil and its critical state curve. Undrained tests were carried out to study the behaviour under the effect of repeated loading cycles, and in particular the role of the grain size distribution, consolidation stresses and cyclic stress deviator.
