Selection of Single-tuned Filter and High Pass Damped Filter with Changes of Inverter Type to Reduce Harmonics on Microgrid AC-DC

Abstract

Distributed Generation (DG) such as solar and wind power plants utilizing power electronic equipment in the set of an inverter to be capable to connect to a grid system. The Inverters are power electronics equipment based on switching operations. Its operation can cause power quality problems in the electrical power system in the set of harmonics. The harmonics generated by the inverter depending on the number of pulses employed. This research aims to reduce the harmonics that appear if the DG enters the AC-DC micro-grid system to comply with the IEEE 519-1992 harmonics standard. The method employed is the adoption of a single-tuned passive filter and high-pass type damped with the inverter type variation based on the number of pulses. The filter is combined with each inverter 6, 12, 24 and 48 pulses. Based on harmonic simulations that have been carried out on 6, 12 and 24 inverters using filters successfully reduced harmonic successive currents up to 20%, 14%, and 6%, while harmonic reductions of successive voltages up to 13%, 13%, and 7%. In a 48-pulse inverter, there is no required for a passive filter owing to harmonic current and voltage distortion less than the IEEE standard.
