Screened exchange interactions at the interface of transition metals

Abstract

Exchange interaction at the bulk of transition metal is well described with Hund's J parameter. For bare Coulomb interactions, J can be analytically obtained. However, the value is too large. Although J is often treated as independent to the orbital-pairs, Racah parameters suggest that the value depends on the orbital pairs. In this chapter, we modify the Racah parameters using a Yukawa-type screened Coulomb interaction and show that in a strong screening limit, J is independent of the orbital pair. On the other hand, the exchange parameter at the interface of transition metal is often described with s-d exchange interaction. While interfacial interaction seems to be limited only by the dirtiness of the interface, we show that in strong screening limit, the exchange interaction at the interface is limited by the electron-electron repulsive interaction.
