Relationship Between Urban and Rural In Representation of Place

Abstract

This is to show urban and rural represented as places. Human universals are bound in the notion of place. Urban and rural as place are implicated in transformations of power relations, and life-worlds, and people day to day practice of life. Class struggles and relations of power and meaning are tied together. Urban and rural are represented in many relations of dominance and resistance involving social groups defined by class and race. To interpret their meaning, representations are made from particular positions within structure of social relations. This method having the result that the countryside can be the beautiful rural idyll of an eighteenth century Indonesian oil painting, and also dull and backwards. The city can be the site of excitement and pleasure or of sin and danger. They both have two sides of binary opposition notions. Images of the country and the city are connected to issues of power.
