Abstract
One of the most popular love themes that commonly exposed is romantic love. The concept of romantic love itself, which all the time has been declared, is also full of ideologies that benefitting one side, thus endangering other sides who do not have awareness. Those who do not have awareness, and thus often misinterpret the concept of love, are women. It is a result of patriarch culture that has been internalized in every aspect of society's life, including in love. According to Erich Form (1956:88-96), one of the kinds of love is romantic love, which is a form of love that craving for a unity of personalities between one and another in a total manner. As a result, the concept of romantic love has no longer free of values. It becomes a form of domination towards woman by means of cultural institution. Novel O/Fathers and Sons by Ivan Turgenev, in which the writer depicts the female character as an emancipationist person in his era. In this sense, Turgenev creates a new idealistic figure of woman. The problems of this chapter are how the novel reveals woman's perspective regarding love equality and how the social construction affects the way of the female character interprets love. The problems will be solved by applying character and setting theory (intrinsic), Simone de Beauvoir's feminism, and sociology of literature theory. The method that will be applied in this research is descriptive analysis. The main female character in this novel is Anna Sergeyevna Odinstova. She is depicted as a figure of woman who is different to other women in experiencing the life. Anna is different because she does not follow the standard of ideal woman in the 19th century. She even tends to adopt certain values that are considered as masculine and can be like that because she has a desire to determine her own fate in the future. This done by her through transcendence. The character of Anna makes the knowledge as the most decisive factor in the fulfilment of love. In this novel, it is implicitly seen that education holds a crucial role in forming woman awareness which eventually has an impact on how to interpret love. Educational factor in actual fact is more significant than socio-economic factor.
