Abstract
Hemangiopericytoma is a mesenchymal neoplasm derived from pericytes (cells that surround the capillary blood vessels). The incidence of this tumor is approximately 3% of all soft tissue sarcomas, although its occurrence in the lungs is very rare. Herein, we present the case of a 31-year-old sailorman with primary pulmonary malignant hemangiopericytoma. The patient had visited the pulmonology clinic in September 2011 for his annual health check-up. He underwent surgical tumor resection/thoracotomy and was diagnosed with malignant hemangiopericytoma through histopathological analysis. Radiotherapy and chemotherapy were planned, but only chemotherapy was administered due to patient noncompliance. The tumor slowly progressed, and the patient died in June 2017, after 5 years of the definitive diagnosis of hemangiopericytoma.
