Abstract

In this study the sorghum fibers were fibrillated using alkalinization–thermal method, with NaOH concentration of 0, 5, and 10% and pressured–soaking time variations of 1 and 3 minutes. The molecular structure, hydrophobicity and crystallinity of the resulting fibrils were analyzed using FTIR, Sessile Drop test and XRD, respectively. The fibers that were fibrillated with 5% NaOH for 3 minutes contain less concentration of lignin and hemicellulose, higher contact angle, and increased crystallinity index. The increase in the hydrophobicity of the modified sorghum fibers indicated the increase of the natural fibers compatibility with the polymer matrix.
