Preliminary design of corncob based furfural plant

Abstract

Cob corn is one of solid waste farm which contents pentosan, and has economic value to be produced as furfural products. Furfural making process use semibatch process by generating hydrolysis main reaction with sulfuric acid catalyst. Reactor in use is stirred batch reactor under 2 bar pressure and 128°C for 70 minutes. Furfural purification use azeotropic distillation and dehydration column to gain furfural with 99% purity. Suprayield Technology is chosen due its better economic value to be compared with conventional technology. According to SuperPro Designer® simulation, to produce 183 kg/batch furfurals based on 2008's market demands expectation, needs 900 kg/batch (4.9 kg/batch furfural) raw materials in form of cob corn, 36% sulfic acid or in amount of 84 kg/batch (0.45 Kg/Kg furfural). For production capacity of 362 tons per year, to build a furfural fabric in Indonesia demand US$ 2.855.773,00 total investment, with manufacturing cost about US$ 189.865,00. The proper parameter of furfural fabric with 362 tons per annum is within NPV US$ 2.873.820,29, IRR 15%, PBP 4 years and 9 months.
