Fibroblast growth factor 21 (FGF21) is a member of FGF family that plays a role as endocrinefactor. Liver and adipose tissue are major target of FGF21. The expression of FGF21 in liveris regulated by peroxisome proliferator activated receptor alpha (PPARα), while peroxisomeproliferator activated receptor gamma (PPARγ) regulate FGF21 expression in adipose tissue. Both transcription factors are involved in carbohydrate and lipid metabolism. Hyperglycemia, hyperinsulinemia, and dyslipidemia are observed in insulin resistance. Treatment with FGF21 inin vitro and in vivo study showed that FGF21 have the potential to overcome insulin resistance aswell as increasing tissue’s sensitivity towards insulin.
