Abstract

Food loss and waste is generated throughout the stages of the food supply chain – production, post-harvest & storage, processing & packaging, distribution & marketing, and consumption. Every year, the amount of food waste generated increases significantly, resulting in economic, environmental, and social losses. Indonesia is one of the countries that has committed to reducing half of the current amount of food waste through the Sustainable Development Goals 2030 agreement. To support this commitment, a policy that is comprehensive and integrated is needed to reduce the amount of food waste. This work aims to examine the dynamic relationships in food supply chain systems that produce food loss and waste. This study provides appropriate policy recommendations for reducing food loss and waste in Indonesia. This study uses a causal loop analysis to see the feedback relationship of the variables in the food supply chain system that results in food loss and waste. The result shows that two policies can be used to reduce food loss and waste: investment in infrastructure and technology and implementation of waste management.
