Photoelectrocatalysis for simultaneous hydrogen production and ammonia degradation using CuO-TiO2nanotubes

Abstract

Titania nanotube arrays (TiNTAs) prepared via anodization were utilized as a photocatalyst for hydrogen production and ammonia degradation. To enhance the performance of photocatalyst, CuO nanoparticles were added into TiNTAs by the SILAR method with a number of cycles. FESEM imaging proved a nanotubular structure was successfully generated and a better distribution of CuO nanoparticles on a higher number of cycles. The bandgap energy was analyzed by UV-DRS analysis, showing a reduced bandgap of CuO-TiNTAs. The highest hydrogen production was obtained under a photoelectrocatalytic system with CuO-TiNTAs developed under 20 cycles of SILAR with total hydrogen of 7.38 mmol and 16% ammonia being degraded over 120 min.
