Performance Evaluation of Video Streaming Application via Named Data Network (NDN)

Abstract

Named-Data Networking is internet architecture that differs than Internet Protocol. It uses domain-names rather than IP-Addresses. Video streaming is multimedia content-delivery process. There are two video-streaming challenges, i.e. bandwidth and video codecs. We measure the video streaming application performance through NDN. We measure the delay, jitter and packet-loss on widely-used codecs, i.e. MPEG2, H264, H265, VP8, VP9. The results showed that VP9 provides the lowest delay and jitter, while MPEG2 gives the highest results. It also shows that IP-based networks provide better performance with delay measurements reaching up-to 180ms lower than NDN using the same codec.
