Abstract

This study focused on designing left-handed metamaterial (LHM) structure to improve the performance of proposed circular microstrip antenna. Circular microstrip antennas and LHM are designed and fabricated using FR-4 materials with İr = 4.6. LHM is added in front of the circular microstrip antenna with center frequency 2.9 GHz. Measurement result of fabricated antenna showed gain enhancement of 2.33dB (67.5%) at center frequency 2.953 GHz. Moreover, the addition of metamaterial structure also reduces the circular antenna patch diameter to 2.12%, and reflection coefficient decreases to -36.95 dB. This work also discuss the performance of the simulated microstrip circular array antenna of 1x4 element with and without LHM structure and obtained gain enhancement equal to 1.85dB (20%).
