Abstract

Introduction: The increasing population of elderly in Indonesia have brought forth an increased risk of health problems. The decline of cognitive functions is one of them, which is a maladaptive response marked by impaired memory, disorientation, incoherence, and difficulty in thinking logically. This decline in cognitive function can be prevented by physical exercises, in this case, elderly gymnastics. Objective: This research aims to find out about the health benefits of elderly gymnastics on cognitive functions Methods: The main method of this research is a literature study using Google Scholar and EBSCO using combination of keywords such as "senam lansia" and "fungsi kognitif" in Indonesian, along with “elderly gymnastics “AND “cognitive function” in English. This method yields 16 articles that fits within the purpose and theme of the research. Results: The research finding suggests that all articles found a correlation between elderly gymnastics and a change in elderly cognitive function Conclusion: A 15-minutes brain exercise on the elderly at least once a week for 6 weeks or more, is found to expedite the flow and volume of blood that carries oxygen to organs especially brain and therefore increasing alertness, concentration, and cognitive function memory.
