Abstract
Crashworthiness of the vehicle plays important role in protecting the passengers during collision. It can be improved based on the design, material, and the
manufacturing process used in the structure. Spot welding as one of the commonly used methods for manufacturing in the automotive industry is interesting to be investigated for improving crashworthiness. This study aims to investigate the spot welds effect on crashworthiness of a thin-walled structure with circular cross-section. As a part of a preliminary study, this research was conducted by making models with several variations in the number of spot welds, which were 2, 4, 8, 12, and 16 points. The models were analyzed using ANSYS Explicit Dynamics to determine the value of energy absorption and crush force efficiency. The speed of impactor used in this simulation was 15.56 m/s referring to New Car Assessment Program (NCAP). The results were then used to determine the influence of spot welds number and the optimal number of spot weld for a thin walled structure with circular cross-section. The simulation results show that the number of spot welds influences the crashworthiness especially in term of crush force efficiency. The optimal value is achieved on the thin-walled structure with 8 spot welds.
