Abstract

The function of the language in a society is as a communication tool used to maintain the culture of each speaker. Therefore, the translation process is needed in transferring these cultural words. Up to now, the literature that discusses the translation of cultural terms is still hard to find, especially the translation of Korean cultural terms into Indonesian, or vice versa. Therefore, to fill this gap, the study attempt to analyze and discuss this issue and translation techniques. This study seeks to find out how words containing cultural terms are translated from Indonesian into Korean and what techniques are used in translating them. The results show that there are 102 words containing cultural terms that appear in the corpus data. According to Newmark theory (1988), they can be classified into 3 categories, namely ecology 54 words, cultural material 37 words and social culture 11 words. From these 102 words, it is also found that 50 cultural words were not translated into target-language text. In addition, the techniques used in translating these cultural words tend to vary according to the meaning of the context of the text. Referring to the theory of Newmark (1988), the technique used in translating these words are transference, naturalization, cultural equivalent, descriptive, transposition, synonym, literal translation, modulation, and footnotes.
