Abstract
This paper discusses the formation of animal sound onomatopoeia in Korean with a descriptive-analytical qualitative approach. This paper is a morphological study that focuses on the formation of the word onomatopoeia of animal sounds with a synchronous concept. The writing of this paper is motivated by a lack of literature that discusses onomatopoeia in linguistic studies in Indonesia, specifically onomatopoeia of animal sounds in Korean. The purpose of writing this paper is to describe the formation of the Korean language onomatopoeia. There are 28 onomatopoeic animal sounds which will be analyzed according to the theory of onomatopoeia and mimesis word formation theory by Lee and Chae Wan. This study leads to the findings that animal crying onomatopoeia can be classified based on its formation: 1 onomatopoeia formed by one syllable (single expression); 13 onomatopoeia formed by reduplication of one syllable; 7 onomatopoeia formed by reduplication of two roots consisting of the same syllables; 5 onomatopoeia formed by combination of completely different syllables; and 2 onomatopoeia formed by reduplication of three syllable words with the same root. Hence, reduplication of one syllable formation is the most than the other formation.
