Abstract

Active-passive term used in relation with the discussion of diathesis verb in clause structure(Kaswanti, 1986:3). Diathesis is the universality of language (universal system language),there is in languages around the world. In the development of language studies, it is knownthat not all languages show its core characteristics of passive in the same manner, in fact, certain language is considered not having passive construction. Dixon (2000:7), and Abraham(2006:2) establish the universal passive criteria. This article provides initial review of passivediathesis in Javanese (BJ), and Old Javanese (BJK), as well as language that is estimated tobe used in the period between Old Javanese and Javanese. The characteristics of passivediathesis in the languages above are compared to show its similarities and differences.
