National Reading Road Show Program: A Case Study to Increase Reading Interest in Indonesia

The purpose of this study is to analyze National Reading Road Show Program in order to increase the reading interest in Indonesia. Reading interest in Indonesia still needs to be developed and increased. A national Reading Road Show which is one of its kind, is a program that conducted by National Library of Indonesia. The aims of the program are to increase peoples’ understanding and awareness on the importance of reading and the role of library to support and increase reading interest in society. In this program, the representative of National Library of Indonesia, Regional Public Library, Regional House of Representatives, and public society are sat together to build the same understanding and educate the society and stake holders on the importance of building and increasing reading interest. The program is conducted annually through talk show involving National Library of Indonesia, Regional Public Library, and Regional House of Representative as the speakers that take place in some provinces covering west, central and eastern part of Indonesia. Furthermore, this program is in line with the vision of national Library which is “Towards Creating Smart Indonesia through Reading by Empowering the Role of Library. Besides, smart society who are benefitted by the culture of reading interest will be much more able to collaborate and making connection in all aspects of life among other societies, especially in the era of information nowadays, as they are more literate. To create collaboration and connection requires certain abilities or competencies that one should have. It is only possible to learn and gain through reading. This study is conducted using qualitative approach. Data are collected through interviews with some participants, and some supporting documentations. Data are analyzed using SWOT theory. The result of the study shows that this program gives a positive impact that shown on building people understanding on the importance of developing reading interest in society.
