Abstract

Introduction: Operating theatre contribute to 70% of hospital income. To increase the productivity and effectiveness of the operating theatre, an operating theatre performance measurement tool is needed. Lean Six Sigma (LSS) method is one method that can be implemented to improve service quality in hospitals, especially operating theatre performance. Lean Six Sigma uses a results-oriented and project-focused approach to quality, productivity, and profitability. The application of the LSS method can improve the quality of the patient care process, departments interaction, and employee satisfaction. Objective: The aim of this literature review is to find out the application of the Lean Six Sigma method in improving performance of the operating theatre. Methods: A comprehensive search with keywords in the Pubmed, Science Direct, Proquest, and Springer link databases, extracts data with predefined inclusion and exclusion criteria. The article selection process uses the PRISMA method. Results: A systematic search resulted in 8 articles that used Lean Six Sigma methods to improve performance in the operating theatre. Seven studies used the DMAIC (Define, Measure, Analysis, Improve and Control) approach, one study used the Define/Measure/Analyse/Design/Verify (DMADV) and DMAIC frameworks. The LSS method with both DMAIC and DMADV approaches increases the efficiency of the treatment process, mapping process, and finding points that can be improved in surgery, increasing efficiency in the operating theatre, reducing waiting time for surgery, reducing patient length of stays, and reducing delays and cancellation rates for elective surgery. Conclusion: The use of the Lean Six Sigma (LSS) method in hospitals, especially in the operating theatre, improves operating theatre performance by reducing patient treatment time and unnecessary use of resources, increasing patient and family satisfaction, efficiency, safety, and quality of services in the operating theatre.
