Maternal demographic characteristics and psychological well-being among Indonesian pregnant women

Abstract

Psychological problems are frequent and common as well during pregnancy. Psychological health problem can affect mother's well-being. There is few studies in Indonesia focused psychological well-being among pregnant women. Therefore, the present study aims to examine the relationship of maternal demographic characteristics and psychological well-being. This was a cross sectional study, 93 participants were recruited in public hospital, West Java. Data were collected using two instruments: maternal demographic self-questionnaire and Indonesian well-being scale (IWS). Data were analysed with descriptive statistic and Pearson correlation or Chi square test. The result revealed mean age was 27.9 years old (SD=6.83), 68.8% participants were unemployed and 56% had low education. The majority of participants had more than 3 times ANC visited, mean gestational age was 38.47 weeks (SD=3.93), and mean number of pregnancy was 2.09 (SD=1.29). The results confirm psychological well-being categorized in high level (89.22±6.77), the highest score was spiritual and the lowest score was basic need. Findings in this study shows number of pregnancies, employment status, educational level, number of ANC visited were significant with psychological well-being. The study suggests health care provider to promote the important of ANC during pregnancy and considering all factors to increase well-being.
