Abstract
Introduction: Male masculinity was found to be one of the contributing factors in creating stigma around seeking psychological help behavior. There is a belief that opening up to one's emotional distress by men is considered weak and not masculine. Objective: this study aims to map the available evidence regarding the influence of masculinity on the help-seeking behavior for mental health assistance in men in developing countries. Methods: This scoping review uses the framework from Arksey and O'Malley, which consists of identifying review questions; seek relevant evidence; select relevant studies; map data; and discuss, conclude and report the results. PRISMA flowchart is used to display the flow of evidence search. Results: The results of the article screening found 5 articles that were relevant to the research topic. This review presents 4 themes, namely masculinity and mental health, vulnerability in men, factors that influence male masculinity, and mental health seeking behavior in men. Conclusion: Individual beliefs and phenomena that occur around men regarding mental health are closely related to the traditional ideology of masculinity, stigma and stereotypes of masculinity which must always appear strong and must not show vulnerability because they are considered a sign of weakness that becomes an obstacle and has an impact on men's negative attitudes. In addition, the challenges faced by developing countries where health facilities are not yet in its optimal condition or not evenly distributed can act as additional barriers to this action.
