Abstract
This paper discusses the mechanism of scripting as part of the digital creative-making process in an interior architecture design studio. With the development of parametric technologies, some repetitive and intuitive design tasks can be automated. Nevertheless, there is still a relatively limited discussion on how script enables creative experimentation by generating multiple possibilities of design which can there be developed further. The study explores such discussion in the context of the third-year design studio of an interior architecture program in the Department of Architecture at Universitas Indonesia. Based on such study, this article identifies three different learning strategies of digital making utilizing the process of scripting. The first strategy is to enable iterative reflections of the value and operations in relation to the design ideas that become the starting points of the design development. The scripting process followed through the integration of the program by examining the interior possibilities of the developed scripted model. The last strategy highlights the importance of the scripting process to be further developed in hierarchies of elements and qualities, be it in the forms, in structures, or the surfaces. The study concludes that these strategies are important to maintain consistency of the creative iteration within the overall design process. As part of interior architecture design learning, the process of scripting highlight possibilities of defining spatial rules in connection with bodies as well as the surrounding context.
