Abstract

Background
In our daily practice of pediatrics, diagnosis of sinusitis is rarely made, it is far less common than in adult patients. Many studies in pediatrics showed that incidence of sinusitis (acute, subacute, and chronic) is high.

Objective
The aim of this study is to evaluate clinical manifestations of patients diagnosed with sinusitis in Child Health Department during the last 7 years, to identify the most prominent clinical abnormalities and examinations to diagnose pediatric sinusitis.

Methods
This was a descriptive-retrospective study. Data were collected from medical records of patients diagnosed with sinusitis in Child Health Department Ciptomangunkusomo Hospital, in 1998–2004.

Results
During 7 years (1998–2004), there were 163 patients diagnosed as sinusitis, 90 male and 73 female. Most were above 6 years (113 patients). The most frequent clinical manifestations were cough in 152 (93.3%) patients and rhinorrea in 131 (80.4%) patients. Factors associated with sinusitis: asthma, enlarged adenoid, and allergic rhinitis found in 84 (51.5%), 64 (39.3%), 44 (27%) patients respectively. Most radiographic features were sinus opacification which found in 158 (96.9%) patients, while air fluid level found only in 3 patients and mucosal thickening only in 1 patient.

Conclusion
