Light Absorption in Semiconductors with Quadratic and Quartic Energy Dispersions

Research output: Chapter in Book/Report/Conference proceedingConference contributionpeer-review

Abstract

Calculations of light absorption in semiconductors are often performed assuming a parabolic energy dispersion in both the valence and conduction energy bands. However, this approach is not quite realistic, considering that the actual shape of the energy bands often deviates from the quadratic behavior. Therefore, in this study we investigate the effect of different shapes of electronic band structure on the light absorption in semiconducting materials. In particular, the absorption spectra are calculated for hypothetical semiconductors with quadratic (parabolic) and quartic (non-parabolic) energy dispersions. We also consider the effects of dimensionalities (from one to three dimensions) and compare the calculated spectra.
