Abstract
This research is focused on a study of theme in Korean short story, Chisuk,
written by Ch’ae Man Shik through its supporting ideas and writing style. This
short story is relevant to be studied as it shows Japan Colonialism in Korea using
satire through its main character which makes this work is unique and different
from the other works. The research method applied in this thesis is a close reading
method with all its analysis refers to the text. Historical background is considered
as well. The result of the study is that the theme of Chisuk short story is a critic to
the pro-colonialist people during Japan colonialism period. It is also found that
this work is the writer’s effort to encourage Korean people of their awareness to
nationalism.
