Abstract

Simulacra and hyperreality have been around since history first recorded itself. One group tries to copy another group until someone believes that the copy was real; that is the general idea and simplification of simulacra and hyperreality. Simulacra mean to simulate others, while hyperreality means that unconsciously believed that the copy is the real. This case happens so often in this modern and advanced world we rarely even notice it. Simulacra in architecture can be seen from the trend that is happening right now, the trend of using foreign architecture into our socio-culture area because they look cooler, and sometimes when the context of the site and the socio-culture allows it, the simulacra building will be seen as authentic foreign architecture by the people as it happens in this research. This research aims to understand the case of Gramedia Sudirman Yogyakarta Bookstore that tries to simulate colonial-style buildings and how people perceive them as simulacra or hyperreality.
