Abstract
This study aims to discover the geographical characteristics of the city in Indonesia using GIS-based spatial pattern approach. The temporal analysis is conducted on several cities in Indonesia, primarily related to the population growth. Spatial analysis is also performed to explore the geographical characteristics of the city. There are three categories of data from three different sources that are using in this study: 1) district boundaries from Geospatial Information Agency of Indonesia; 2) public facilities location which is represented by POIs data from OpenStreetMap; 3) demographic data from Central Agency on Statistics of Indonesia. The density of the public facilities is estimated using the kernel density estimation (KDE) technique, using the heatmap plugin feature in QGIS. The contribution of this study is to provide an overview of the time series comparison between several cities in Indonesia. This study also clarifies an indication of the relationship between population density and the density of public facilities. Further study is needed to quantify this relationship. Thus this knowledge can be utilized as a foundation for city planning and business strategy development.
