Abstract

Potential Acid-Forming (PAF) material from coal mine overburden used as backfill material during mine reclamation can form Acid Mine Drainage (AMD) and cause environmental pollution. Fly ash from Coal-Fired Power Plants (CFPP) is known for its ability to neutralize acids. Therefore, it can be used as a backfill material to mitigate AMD formation. The Simpang Belimbing Mine-Mouth CFPP has a strategic location to utilize fly ash as a backfill material due to the mine location and the adjacent fly ash source. The research objective was to determine AMD formation from mine overburden and the potential use of fly ash as an AMD neutralizer through geochemical characterization. Geochemical characterization was conducted using a static test to obtain the Net Acid Generation (NAG) and Net Acid Producing Potential (NAPP) values. The research results showed the presence of PAF material with a NAG pH of 2.63 and NAPP 38.04 Kg H2SO4/ton material. Furthermore, fly ash from Mine-Mouth CFPP Simpang Belimbing was included as NonAcid-Forming (NAF) material with a NAG pH value of 6.81 and NAPP -38.09 Kg H2SO4/ton material. Based on those research results, fly ash could be used as a backfill material to mitigate AMD caused by PAF material.
