Abstract

Background: Carpal Tunnel Syndrome occurrs very often among patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus. However, therapies for CTS these patients are limited. Beside surgery, the only alternative therapy available for this condition is intracanal steroid therapy. Objective of the research is to assess the clinical profile and electroneurography of CTS in type 2 diabetic patients before and after therapy with intracanal steroid. Methods: A cross sectional study was conducted. The target population of this study was all type 2 diabetes mellitus patients with CTS who visited the subdivision of EMG, Department of Neurology, Faculty of Medicine University of Indonesia. A clinical evaluation and electroneurography evaluation was performed 2 weeks after the first examination. Results: Out of 57 subjects who were included in this study, 64% were female, 62% were classified as older adults, 75% had a normal body mass index, and 67% presented with signs and symptoms of polineuropathy. The clinical symptoms based on GSS and electroneurography were found to be significantly different before and after therapy with intracanal steroid injections (p<0.05) The change of clinical symptoms had a statistically significant association with age( p=0.006 ), while the change of electroneurography findings had an association with gender. Conclusions: We found both clinical and electroneurographic improvements in type 2 diabetes mellitus patients with CTS who were treated with intracanal steroid therapy. These improvements were associated with age and gender.
