Abstract

Introduction: Chronic kidney disease is one of the catastrophic diseases that is a burden for health financing. The need to know the risk factors for this disease can be one of the initial efforts in preventing chronic kidney disease. Objective: The purpose of this study was to analyze the scientific literature that discusses the risk factors for chronic kidney failure in adulthood. Method: Systematic review is used as a method in this study. The articles used are English articles from 2012-2022 obtained from the Scopus, ScienceDirect, and ProQuest databases. The inclusion criteria are data containing the keywords risk factors, chronic kidney disease, and adults, while the exclusion criteria are articles that are not related to these keywords. The articles included in this study were cross-sectional with a large sample size. They were conducted in various countries, such as Nicaragua, the United States of America, Ethiopia, Nepal, Malaysia, Nigeria, Iran, India, and China. Result: It is obtained 10 articles that discuss risk factors for chronic kidney disease in adulthood. The risk factors discussed are age, gender, and ethnicity, family history of kidney disease, hypertension, diabetes mellitus, kidney stones, obesity, dyslipidemia, and smoking. Conclusion: Factors that increase the risk of chronic kidney disease are older age, male, ethnicity (African American, Hispanic, Native American, or Asian), family history of kidney disease, hypertension, diabetes mellitus, kidney stones, obesity, hypercholesterolemia, and smoking. Understanding the risk factors and implementing screening of at-risk populations will increase early detection, initiate treatment of modifiable risk factors, and appropriate treatment for CKD. Prevention can be done through promotive and preventive activities to reduce cases of chronic kidney disease in the community through a healthy lifestyle.
