Failure analysis of wet solvent stainless steel pipe

Abstract

The 304L Stainless steel material was found leak due to cracking problem at the several areas during operation less than a year and still in the warranty period from the Contractor. The pipe is used to transport fluid which is steam, styrene and solvent at 155°C operating temperature and connected to stripper vessels. The vessel material itself is duplex. The appearance of cracking is trans-granular crack. Several laboratory tests have been done to find the root cause. And it confirmed chloride stress corrosion cracking occurred, SEM-EDS show the presence of chloride ion.
