Abstract

Multi-hull ships are growing rapidly to respond the challenge for larger load capacity, yet having lower fuel consumption. Advantages of pentamaran ship are the need for lower power, loss of speed due to wave is lower, and very good of seakeeping characteristics. This study aimed to determine the effect of variations in separation and staggered of outer side hulls to the total resistances to get the configuration with the lowest resistance interference. Configuration was varied by adjust the separation position. Method of towing carriage experiments are used with Fr variations from 0,10 to 0,70. Conclusion, the effect of outer side hulls position either separation or staggered give different characteristic on resistance depend on the Fr value. The analysis in high range of Fr describes while outer side hulls adjusted the closer separation, the higher total resistance occurred. At high speed II.a configuration (S/L = 75/200, R/L = 1/20) gives favorable drag reduction with maximum 22.65% in Fr around 0.55.
