Abstract

Waqf plays a vital role as an economic instrument in Islam, with a wide array of applications. Waqf is also believed to have potential in resolving environmental issues. Therefore, it is necessary to study the way in which Islam and Indonesia’s laws view environmental waqf. A good example of applying the concept is the Hutan Wakaf in Aceh. This study uses a legal-normative method and legal analysis to look at the legal and conceptual aspect of the Hutan Wakaf, Indonesia’s laws on waqf, and the conformance to Islamic recommendations for environmental waqf. This study found that the implementation of the Hutan Wakaf in Aceh will require many things to be fully successful, such as the establishment of specific regulations, socialization for the candidate wakifs (the people donating), and preparation of the nazhirs (those managing and developing the waqf); the public must be made knowledgeable in environmental matters and waqf.
