Abstract

The purpose of this study was to understand the influence of empowering preschool teachers to motivate mothers to brush the teeth of children ages 36-71 months. The design study was community trial. Subjects were selected through a purposive sampling method for 172 mothers and their children ages 36-71 months. Oral health and hygiene condition were assessed by measuring dmf-t index, plaque index, and gingival bleeding index. The teachers educated mothers over four sessions in a month. The mean dmf-t index in children ages 36-71 months was 7.22. After 1 month intervention with education on proper dental hygiene given to a mother by a teacher, there was a significant relationship between plaque index and gingival bleeding index before and after the mother was given this education. Ninety-eight children had plaque index decrease (57%); 80 children had decrease in the gingival bleeding index (46.5%). There is an association between dental health education when teachers motivate mothers to brush the teeth of children ages 36-71 months.
