Effect of yttrium oxide (Y2O3) on the conductivity of LiNi0.5Co0.2Mn0.3O2(NCM 523) as lithium-ion batteries cathode material

Abstract

The cathode material LiNi0.5Co0.2Mn0.3O2 (NCM 523) was added with yttrium oxide (Y2O3) with the aim to increas the conductivity of the NCM 523 cathode material and to observe the effect of variations in the composition of the Y2O3 addition to the conductivity of NCM 523 cathode material. Y2O3 was added by milling and sintering processes. Analysis using X-ray diffraction showed the results of mixing materials in the form of a composite with a maximum crystallinity of 59.27%, particle morphology was observed by scanning electron microscope (SEM-EDX) with a mean particles diameter of 13.31 μm, and measurement results with LCR-meter showed that the conductitivity value increased with the addition of Y2O3, the highest was 8.47x10-5 S.cm-1.
