Abstract
Diabetes Mellitus (DM) is a disease that requires control of metabolic status to minimize multi-organ complications. Targeted education is needed to improve self-care and controlled glycemic index. The purpose of this study was to determine the effectiveness of self-care education on self-management behavior and blood sugar in diabetes millitus patients. This research was conducted in June-July 2020 at the working area of the Puskesmas Sukapura Village, Jakarta. The research design was quasy experimental with one group pre-test and post-test. There were 25 DM patients selected by purposive sampling technique. Random blood sugar and self-management behavior were assessed at week 1 and 4 using the Diabetes Self-Management Instrument (DSMI) questionnaire. Paired T-test statistical analysis showed significant difference in self-management behavior before and after Self-care education (p 0.000 <0.05), however, there was no significant difference in blood sugar before and after Self-care education (p. 0.956> 0.05). Based on the multivariate test, it was found that the duration of suffering from diabetes and blood sugar pretest had a partial effect on the post blood sugar variable (p <0.05), while the variables of age and duration of suffering from diabetes had a partial effect on post self-management behavior (p <0.05). Self-care education is an effective program to improve self-care behavior and glycemic control. This study recommends the need to implement self-care education on an ongoing basis to prevent complications in DM patients.
