Abstract
Getting older caused physical and psychological changes lead to functional inability in daily activity, decrease of muscle strength and function which can cause body imbalance problem, difficulty in changing position from sitting to standing, high risk to fall as well as postural change.This study aims to see the effectiveness of Buerger Allen exercise to lower extremity functional activity increase in elderly at BPLU Senja Cerah Manado. The design was quasy experimental with post test only control grup design with 72 elderly recruited through purposive sampling technique. Where 52 served as intervention group and the remaining as control group. The intervention given was Buerger Allen Exercise done for five day twice a day with 30 minutes in each session. The instrument used was Lower Extremity Functional Scale. T test analysis showed a difference in lower extremity functional activity before and after intervention given and a significant different between two groups. There was an increase in Lower Extremity Functional Activity of the elderly after the Buerger Allen Exercise was carried out. The Ancova test showed that there was an effect of Buerger Allen exercise on LEFS, controlled by the characteristics of age and gender with Correction Model of 0.001. Buerger Allen Exercise was effective in increasing lower extremity functional activity and it was recommended as an independent activity for elderly as well as part of nursing education.
