Abstract

Introduction: Self-medication is an independent effort made by a person to treat himself when experiencing complaints of illness. The trend of self-medication is increasing in Indonesia. Objective: A model was built to find out the determinants of self-medication practice in Indonesia. Method: The research uses 2019 Susenas data with 258,633 people as a research sample. Logistic regression analysis was carried out to determine significant socioeconomic variables in self-medication practice. Result: Self-medication behavior was carried out by 73.49% of people with determinant variables that were significantly related, including ages 15-25 years (OR: 1.254; 95% CI: 1.209 – 1.301), ages 26-65 years (OR: 1.254; 95% CI: 1.161) – 1.230), gender (OR: 1.059; 95% CI: 1.035 – 1.085), an education level (OR: 0.885; 95% CI: 0.866 – 0.904), marital status (OR: 0.948; 95% CI: 0.927 – 0.970), working status (OR: 1.151; 95% CI: 1.128 – 1.175), smoking status (OR: 1.352; 95% CI: 1.316 – 1.387), health insurance ownership status (OR: 1.487; 95% CI: 1.456 – 1.519), the status of residence (OR: 1.032; 95% CI: 1.012 – 1.050), access to information technology (OR: 1.074; 95% CI: 1.031 – 1.079) and economic status. Conclusion: Age, gender, educational status, marital status, smoking status, location of residence, working status, health insurance ownership status, information technology access status, and a person's economic status have a significant effect on an individual's decision to practice self-medication. The determinant of not having health insurance is the factor that most influences self-medication practice.
